Leonard Kohen, Esq.

Leonard Kohen is a general commercial litigator whose specialties include election law and government affairs, real estate, banking and securities litigation, fraud claims (prosecuting and defending), premises and malpractice liability, employment law and regulatory/compliance work.

In 2012, Leonard secured two major victories for clients, including a court award against a popular newsstand magazine and a settlement in an employment discrimination claim against a large multi-national entity. For several years Leonard represented victims of mortgage fraud and predatory lending schemes generally ending with hard fought successful resolutions. As counsel to State Senate Minority Leader John Sampson and the Senate Democratic Party conference in federal redistricting litigation, Leonard defeated motions to dismiss by state Senate and Assembly majority leaders, enabling the court to draw redistricting maps without disruption to the election calendar. Leonard served as a litigation associate for a combined six years at two Manhattan boutique law firms with sophisticated commercial practices, and also has represented numerous clients in general counsel capacities. Besides the courts, he has represented clients before attorneys general and other administrative agencies in New York (e.g., NYC Fire Department, Department of Consumer Affairs, Environmental Control Board).

In 2008, Leonard worked as an attorney in New York at the Brennan Center for Justice at the NYU School of Law, where he defended the newly enacted Connecticut public campaign finance system, containing the strongest “pay to play” prevention laws in the country, against constitutional challenges in federal litigation in New York. Leonard began his career as a speechwriter at the Permanent Mission of Thailand to the United Nations, where he wrote policy speeches post-1997 Asian financial crisis on governance and social and economic development; he also was part of Thai delegations to working groups that drafted procedure and other regulations for the International Criminal Court (ICC).
